This installer is ShareWare. Please send 15$ as cash, no checks please, because the fee for foreign country checks is about 8$.
This installer creates a minimal System disk by deleting some resources from your System7, Finder, System 7 Tuneup, CapsLock, and the System Enablers for the Mac IIvx, IIvi, Powerbook 160/180, and Duo210/210. Up to 350 kBytes disk space will be freed!
You can 'Easy Install' this script and any unused resources will be deleted. This option creates a minimal system for any Mac. If you select the "customize"-button, there are some additional options, especially when installing for Mac Plus, Mac SE, and Mac Classic. These three machines requires some resources that can be deleted when your´e sure that these machines will never be used. They require:
1) Some additional fonts. They are in the ROMs, but the system doesn´t use them. The newer machines uses these fonts and thus can be deleted.
2) Some color Icons. You must not delete icl4 or icl8-resources when using some black&white machines. (Hi folks at engineering: that´s a nice feature…-:)
If you select customize, you can delete things like:
• "About the Finder…"-Dialog (select option-'About this Macintosh')
• Remove the color icons, window color, color picker package
• Remove the animated 'wrist watch'-cursor
• Compress the animation when calling "Find.." in the Finder.
• System fonts: Chicago, Geneva, and Monaco are deleted, because they are also in the ROMs.
Installer 3.3 or above is required.
• Some usually unused icons, dialog and window colors are deleted
• System pattern: some pattern are deleted, so you can´t customize your background pattern.
• System Sound: Items required for sound cdev sound sampling feature and CD Remote. Some sounds and the sound synthesizer are deleted, also the SoundInputDriver.
• "About keyboards…"-dialog is deleted and the resources needed by the KeyCaps-DA
• AppleTalk, LocalTalk, EtherTalk and printer-drivers are deleted
• Comm Toolbox is deleted
• "Parity check was disabled"- Startup Alert is deleted
• changing the amount of reserved video memory on IIci and IIsi-Alerts deleted
There is another file called 'deleted resources'with a description, which resources will be deleted by the particular installer packages.
1) Install a minimal System 7.0, 7.0.1, or 7.1 system disk. It´s faster to install the system on a hard disk, because a lot of file accesses are required. But you can also copy the utilities disk and remove the hard disk formatting utility. Or try to install this software on a MountImage 1.2b1-Image.
Install System 7 Tuneup (1.1.1), when using 7.0 or 7.0.1.
Delete any unneeded Files like the Control-Panel-Alias in the Apple-Menu.
2) Get an Apple Installer. The installer 3.2 is the standard system 7 installer on your 'Install 1'-Disk. If you want to delete the fonts, you have to use the Installer 3.3. You can find it on the Developer CD (March ´92 and later).
The Installer 3.4 is the system 7.1 installer application.
Copy this installer into the folder of my installer.
3) Start the installation by bouble-clicking the installer. Be careful to choose the right floppy/hard disk!
5) Test it on your machines. (Test your 'First Aid'-Disk BEFORE you need it; if this disk doesn´t work and you must use it, it´s too late...).
6) If this installation doesn´t work, you have to re-install the whole system because the resources are deleted (but we wanted to do it).
7) Please report any errors, suggestion and anything you like or dislike.
8) If you patch this installer, the best resources you can use are the 'FPab', 'FPac', 'FPad' - and 'FPae'-resource. (FP are my initials, and the resources are enumerated aa,ab,ac,ad,..). Only add some resource types to existing packages.
'FPab': selects the first file with a given filetype and creator and deletes the resources.
'FPac': these resources are deleted. The file is specified by filename and folder.
'FPad': these resources are replaced by a resource of other type or ID if they are in the original system. Currently only used for some strings and PICTs. I have changed the resource Type for special countries, so any US-'STR ' will be in the ' USA'-resource. The resource IDs are unchanged, and this is only for better readability.
'FPae': remove a whole resource type, for example used in the "Icons"-Package. Any resources of type icl4, icl8, ics4, ics8, kcs4, kcs8, cctb, dctb,wctb will be deleted.
